Hamburg Day 14 Part 2
Symptomatic of how comfortable we have felt in Hamburg, spent last day just wandering around. Really enjoyed our stay here. Wandered in and out of shops and some lovely old (or old looking) passages. Went back to part we briefly visited on the second day of our 'official' walking tour. Very elegant area. Lots of tourists just sitting around eating (enormous) slabs of cake, sipping on coffees etc. Still heard very little English spoken and no Australian. Not complaining - we have managed to master our 'thank yous, hellos and goodbyes' in German rather well I think. A few words are of course very similar or the same, so that helps. Very upmarket shops but also some more like a DJ's or Myer - good mixture. Stephen found a couple of new t shirts which will alleviate the need for washing of shirts before Edinburgh and a bottle of liquer that is made in Hamburg. Also found a knife sharpener and a cute pair of kitchen scissors for snipping herbs. Just what we were looking for (not). Both made by a company called WMF (short version of longish German name). Company is old - founded in 1853. I'd not heard of WMF but Stephen told me is an old German brand from Werzburg originally. Anyway their stuff is very stylish and useful - sometimes a rare combination.
Didn't feel at all unsafe in Hamburg - well no more than in any big city. Decided to add some photos from Hamburg, Lubeck and Paris. First is probably my favourite in Hamburg - Chili House. Not everyone's taste but I liked the style. Then Hamburg canal, its Concert Hall, Lubeck City Gate, an old Hamburg house and anti-war statute in front of bombed out church. Then back to Paris. Some more obvious than others. Stephen in Palais Royal Galley, Jardin des Plantes, Promenade plantee and instrument inside our favourite Music Museum.
Not sure we will manage to return to Hamburg given the number of places we want to visit and re-visit but would not be unhappy if we did one day.
