Edinburgh 17 August

Bit of a gap in my writing as aside from trying new restaurants and seeing more shows not a lot new for us to report on in Edinburgh.

Had a brilliant lunch down at Leith at a place called Kitchen.  Food and service were outstanding. Unusually for me I had a gin cocktail to start (which I very much enjoyed).  Sampled some grouse sausages and plaice for my main.  We all had lemon souffle for dessert.  One of the best meals I have had in a while.  Also tried out another local restaurant in Broughton - The Olive Branch.  Cute little neighbourhood restaurant.  Didn't think was as good as other local Italian we tried earlier on in the week but still very enjoyable.

I re-visited the Portrait Gallery with our friend and we were joined by another mutual Australian friend who happened to be in Edinburgh.  It is a lovely building and we did a quick look around for an hour or so and then adjourned for a coffee catch up.  Agreed we are very fortunate being able to do these sorts of things.  Aside from the catch up I was excited as got to see one of my favourite paintings again.  Its called the Three Oncologists by Ken Currie.  It is very eerie as the Doctors look ghost-like.  Quite striking.

Did get to see some more  shows. Saw Ed Byrne - crazy Irish comedian.   Very polished performance.  Rob Auton - a youngish Yorkshire man who did a show on Time.  Quite moving performance.  Very small theatre and we were in the front row.  There were funny bits but a fair bit was quite serious.   He has performed at the Fringe for a few years and always picks quite unusual topics.  Last year was on the colour yellow so you get the drift.  Also saw a free fringe show at the back of a pub called ""A Booklovers Comedy show"". Compered by an Australian and the theme being on the love of books. 4 comedians got up and spoke on books (to some extent). Was patchy but still good fun.  Also saw a show called Bedlam on bedlam hospital in London.  Performed by a group of students from Durham Uni.  Very difficult topic and play but they did very well.  The lead actress in particular was excellent.

Quite a few plays on mental health this year or that topic was touched on even by the comedians like Ed Byrnes.  Few shows on Trump and Brexit but I thought most wanted to avoid both issues.  People seem fed up with the general level of chaos and prefer to focus on other issues that they can do something about.

We are now essentially starting our slow trek home.  Left airbnb and have one night back at friend's place.  We carefully repacked our bags and then went into town to discount sports shop - SportsDirect and promptly bought a few more things. Back to friend's place to squeeze new items in.  Actually not bought a lot of things.  Mainly having to fit in some bottles of Scotch.  Never the most sensible of things to buy but there you go. Hoping to add a coffee bean purchase to this while in transit in Vietnam as love their coffee.
